One must admire the strength Ontario Conservative MP Kellie Leitch is displaying in her campaign to become leader of the Conservative party. Her call for the screening of immigrants entering the country for anti-Canadian values is not only the right policy it’s the right strategy for winning. Yes, the same kind of winning that delivered the U.S. presidency to Donald J. Trump.
Conservatives would be wise to choose Leitch for leader as voters across the country would likely reciprocate come the next federal election. It’s a good bet there is a silent majority of Canadians fed up with the current head-in-the sand approach to immigration that favours political correctness over protecting Canadians.
For decades we have been force-fed ideals of diversity and multiculturalism, yet the immigration policies by which these ideals are operationalized are treated as sacrosanct. When was the last time there was a national debate on immigration or on multiculturalism for that matter? These are merely government policies, but they are treated as sacrosanct.
Much as Trump did, Leitch is sparking a much needed conversation on Canada’s immigration policy by proposing new immigrants and refugees undergo a screening process to determine if they hold values which comport with our own. Meaning, screening out those that may find it challenging to accept that women are not property or can be beaten or sold. To identify those that believe gays and lesbians should be stoned or even killed because of their sexual preference. And, to establish if there is tolerance for religions other than their own.
Basically, Leitch is calling for a Western civilization litmus test. While Leitch has pushed back on charges from the left that her proposal targets Muslims, it should be obvious to most where the concern lies. Here are two basic facts. Islamic law, that is Sharia law, is a fundamentalist moral and legal code that affirms the oppression of women and imposes the death penalty on those who are gay. And, according to a worldwide survey by the Pew Research Center an overwhelming percentage of Muslims in many countries want Sharia law to be the official law of the land.
At a time when many immigrants and refugees are streaming into this country from areas in the world where western values of equality and tolerance are alien, it’s a perfectly reasonable proposal to determine if they could be a threat—before inviting them to join the Canadian family.
